Conference travel brings Istanbul over $800 million since 2022
Istanbul’s business events sector has brought in more than $800 million since 2022, according to industry figures reported on October 11, underscoring the strength of conference-led travel demand in the region.

Istanbul’s business events sector has generated more than $800 million in foreign-currency revenue since 2022, according to figures reported on October 11 by Turkish media citing statements from the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce and the Istanbul Convention and Visitors Bureau.
The reported total reflects spending linked to nearly 500 congresses hosted since 2022 and about 200,000 congress travelers. The same statements said individual spending in this segment can reach $4,000 per visitor, highlighting the higher-value profile of meetings and conference travel compared with many forms of leisure tourism.
Business events remain a high-spending travel segment
The update adds to evidence that congress and conference travel continues to play an outsized role in tourism revenue across Europe and neighboring markets. Unlike short-break leisure trips, large-scale events typically bring demand for hotels, restaurants, local transport, retail and professional services at the same time, concentrating economic impact around scheduled gatherings.
According to the reports, the $800 million figure covers direct foreign-exchange income generated by congress visitors since 2022. Industry representatives described the segment as strategically important because it combines visitor spending with professional networking and international institutional links.
Fresh figures reported in October
The latest numbers were published within the last two days and attributed to Şekib Avdagiç, who leads both the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce and the Istanbul Convention and Visitors Bureau. In remarks carried by Anadolu Agency and Hurriyet Daily News, he said the city had hosted close to 500 congresses since 2022 with support from the visitors bureau.
For the wider travel industry, the announcement is another sign that event-driven tourism remains a significant revenue stream even as destinations compete for more year-round and higher-yield visitors. It also points to continuing demand from organizers and delegates for large urban hubs with established meeting infrastructure and international air access.
No new forward booking figures or revenue forecasts were included in the reports.
