Berlin's Museum Island: Planning a Multi-Day Visit
Five major museums sit on one small island in the Spree — trying to see all of them in one day is the most common visitor mistake.
Museum Island (Museumsinsel) packs five major institutions — the Pergamon, Neues, Altes, Bode and Alte Nationalgalerie museums — onto a single island in the Spree. Treating it as a one-day stop is the most common way to see everything badly.
The Pergamon is partly closed
The Pergamon Museum's north wing, including the Pergamon Altar itself, is closed for a long-term renovation, with a phased reopening expected across the coming years. The museum remains open with a reduced but still substantial collection — check current gallery status before visiting if the Altar is the reason for the trip.
A combined ticket, used wisely
The Museum Island day ticket covers all five museums but is only good value if visiting at least three of them, given each has its own standalone admission price. Splitting a visit across two days, using the ticket's date flexibility, is a common and sensible approach.
The Neues Museum's centrepiece
The bust of Nefertiti, in the Neues Museum, draws the steadiest queue on the island — arriving at opening time is the most reliable way to see it without a crowd.
Getting there
The island sits a short walk from Hackescher Markt station, and most Berlin transit day passes cover the S-Bahn and U-Bahn connections needed to reach it.
